Medical Cannabis and horses
While more research is done on the use of medical cannabis, more properties are discovered in the different cannabinoids, that can be found in the Cannabis Sativa L plant. It is true that a large part of medical cannabis research was focused on its therapeutic use in humans, but there is an industry that is interested in the use of cannabinoids in large mammals, such as horses, due to the types of conditions they used to suffer from, during their lives.
Many of the therapeutic effects that are attributed to CBD can be of great help for horses, besides being a natural treatment, that does not interfere with other treatments that are being followed, also because of its low toxicity, it can be administered safely. However, this kind of treatment is only recommended for horses that perform activities of walking, mating, reproductive horses or geriatric, as competition horses cannot use any kind of cannabinoid.

How does CBD interact with horses?
Cannabinoids, such as CBD, can interact with the Endocannabinoid System, that is present in mammals, and help to maintain a state of homeostasis in horses. Furthermore, it is also known that cannabinoids in the Endocannabinoid System have emotional and cognitive effects. This is why cannabinoids like CBD can help regulate various body functions.

Therapeutic benefits of CBD in horses
Animals, such as humans, have an Endocannabinoid System, with CB-1 receptors (responsible for brain processes) and CB-2 receptors (mainly found in the immune system and in peripheral organs). Therefore, animals also produce endocannabinoids and their receptors respond to medical cannabis in a similar way to humans. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of research to do about the therapeutical effects of medical cannabis in pets.
Some of the medical effects that are attributed to CBD in horses are:
- Anti-inflammatory: – Reducing or preventing inflammation.
- Anxiolytic: – Reduces anxiety levels.
- Anti-epileptic: – Reduces or prevents the number of attacks.
- Antineoplastic: – Inhibits the development of neoplasms.
- Neuroprotective: – Recovery or regeneration of the nervous system.
- Digestive: – Helps to avoid digestive problems and facilitates the reduction of inflammation.
“Bella, my 6 year old horse who participated in races and now he is a breeding horse, started to limp, with lack of appetite and very bad mood. They recommended that we used CBD as what we were previously using to treat her it was not giving any food results. After 2 weeks using cannabinoids in a therapeutically with Bella, she no longer limped and had become more social and friendly. She stopped attacking and bitting other horses that she had nearby. That makes us think about using CBD constantly in the barn.”
